MINSK, 18 September (BelTA) – Egypt invites Belarusian construction companies to take part in the construction of the Suez Canal, BelTA learned from Belarusian Trade Minister Valentin Chekanov.
The Minister remarked that the Egyptian side had expressed interest in getting Belarusian construction companies to work for the construction of the Suez Canal. The canal is being reconstructed, the second phase of the canal's construction has been planned. There are very interesting prospects for Belarus taking part in building the canal itself and its infrastructure, noted the Trade Minister.
Valentin Chekanov also said that Belarus and Egypt had agreed on cooperation in the production sector, agriculture, science, sport, tourism, and healthcare. An agreement has been reached to create a working group for setting up joint ventures to make Belarusian automobiles in Egypt. The sides intend to study the markets of Belarus and Egypt together for the sake of establishing joint ventures in the sphere of healthcare. There are also interesting projects in the area of agriculture, which implementation will need Belarusian agricultural machines.
“We concluded that the current figure — the bilateral trade of about $88 million — is very small. Belarus and Egypt have a much larger potential. The intention to improve the state of affairs in all areas is present,” said the Trade Minister.
Meetings of businessmen of Belarus and Egypt took place in the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 18 September. Agreements to supply merchandise were reached during these meetings.
In turn, Egyptian Trade and Industry Minister Mounir Fakhry Abdel-Nour remarked that the Egyptian side invites Belarusian partners to set up joint ventures in Egypt. With this in mind a working group will be set up soon in order to examine the market of Egypt and neighboring countries. “We will continue working in these directions in order to facilitate and bolster the mutual trade. We have also agreed with Belarusian colleagues that Belarus will provide assistance with negotiations on free trade between Egypt and the Customs Union member states,” said the Egyptian Trade and Industry Minister.
