Belarus, Russia need joint import-substitution program in IT

MOSCOW, 6 June (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia need a joint import-substitution program in the IT sector, Belarusian First Deputy Prime Minister Nikolai Snopkov said at the panel discussion “Union State: 25 years of integration - results and new challenges” at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, BelTA has learned.

Nikolai Snopkov emphasized that Belarus and Russia have a common task - to ensure digital sovereignty. “There is a need for a joint import-substitution program in the IT sector,” he said. The first deputy prime minister stated that Russia works much more aggressively and productively in this market than Belarus.

“As for large developments, cooperation chain of large industrial enterprises, digitalization remains a driver of competitiveness and sustainable growth of the economies of the two countries. Since 2000 scientific organizations of Belarus and Russia have successfully implemented about 60 such programs to obtain the latest world-class developments in space, photonics, hydrometeorology, medicine and others areas,” Nikolai Snopkov said.

“The development of a common scientific and technological space in the Union State will become a source of fundamentally new opportunities for the development of new strategic industries. This will lay foundation for a new joint economic model,” the first deputy prime minister said.
