Belarus, Russia agree to enhance cooperation, remove trade barriers

MINSK, 4 December (BelTA) - State Secretary of the Belarus-Russia Union State Sergei Glazyev spoke to journalists about the decisions adopted following the meeting of the High-Level Group of the Council of Ministers of the Union State, BelTA has learned.

“Key documents have been agreed and will now be reviewed by the Union State Council of Ministers and the Supreme State Council. Among the most significant is  the preparation of a decree on subsidizing suburban cross‑border transport, which will provide citizens in the border regions of Smolensk Oblast and Vitebsk Oblast with comfortable, convenient, and affordable connections. A fundamental decision has also been taken on the concept of a ‘Union State product’ with an approved methodology for its definition. We expect this mechanism to be launched soon, creating a basis for stimulating cooperation and implementing joint investment projects,” Sergei Glazyev stated.

Another issue addressed was the regulation on subsidizing interest rates for cooperative and investment projects. “Here too, we have reached a mutual understanding, and we will try to implement this mechanism to modernize the electrification system of Belarusian Railways,” he noted.

Issues related to ensuring a unified economic space and removing existing barriers in mutual trade were also discussed. “The High-Level Group has taken an important step both in resolving pressing current issues and in preparing systemic solutions that would ensure barrier-free functioning of the common market in all areas: in education, consumer goods trade, and public procurement. We expect that in the coming months, through decisions of the Council of Ministers and the Supreme State Council, all these norms and proposals will be adopted,”  Sergei Glazyev concluded.
