Belarus’ potato harvest exceeds 500,000 tonnes

MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) - Potato harvest in Belarus exceeds 500,000 tonnes, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry.

“Some 510,000 tonnes of potatoes have already been harvested, with the average yield making up 3.7 centners per hectare above last year. A total of 73% of areas with potatoes have been cleared. Nationwide, 96,000 tonnes of open-field vegetables have been harvested. The total sown area exceeds 8,000 hectares, with 57% of it cropped now,” the press service informed.

Sugar beet has been harvested from 44% of the area, which amounts to 47,000 hectares. The harvest has yielded 2,332,000 tonnes of sugar beet.

As of 6 October, some 9,321,000 tonnes of grain, including rapeseed and maize, were cropped in Belarus. The regional breakdown is the following: Minsk Oblast - 2.310 million tonnes, Grodno Oblast – 1.812 million tonnes, Brest Oblast – 1.788 million tonnes, Mogilev Oblast – 1.286 million tonnes, Gomel Oblast – 1.107 million tonnes, Vitebsk Oblast – 1.018 million tonnes.

Belarus has harvested 88% of areas planted to grain and leguminous crops, together with maize, which makes up 2,036,000 hectares. Average grain yield is 5.1 centners per hectare higher than last year’s level.

Some 682,000 tonnes of food grain have been delivered under the state procurement program, representing 97% of the target.

Winter grains for grain have been sown across 1,337,000 hectares, 89% of the plan.

Flax has been pulled from over 153,000 hectares, with average yields being 11.9 centners per hectare higher than last year.

Maize for silage and green fodder has been harvested from 56% of the area, which is 573,000 hectares.

Some 554,000 tonnes of hay (77% of the plan) and 13.662 million tonnes of haylage (98% of the plan) have been prepared so far. Forage production has reached 7.558 million tonnes (75% of the target).
