Belarus plans to build 48 dairy farms, over 500 calf nurseries

MINSK, 8 February (BelTA) – Belarus plans to build 48 modern dairy farms and over 500 calf nurseries, Belarus’ Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Ivan Smilgin said in an interview with the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

The country currently has 1,700 dairy farms with modern housing and milking conditions, which account for about 80% of the milk production. “We are not stopping there. Construction of such facilities continues this year. Plans include building approximately 48 dairy farms,” Ivan Smilgin said.

There is an instruction from the head of state and the government to relocate all young cattle to nursery facilities before the winter season, by November 1where the animals will be properly examined and fed. Plans have been coordinated with the regions, and the list of agricultural organizations where such facilities will be built have been compiled. According to Ivan Smilgin, by the end of this year, over 500 such facilities are planned to be constructed, providing 95,100 cattle places.

Speaking about how farms are coping with severe frosts, the deputy minister recalled that, in collaboration with scientists, recommendations for working under such conditions have been put together. These include moving calves indoors, protecting them from drafts, regularly replacing straw, providing warm water and milk to the young animals, among other measures. “If the technologies are followed, mortality will be minimal,” Ivan Smilgin emphasized.

He added that agricultural organizations are sufficiently supplied with vaccines of both Belarusian and foreign production. Vaccination schedules have been approved. Feed is available in the necessary quantities. Significant attention is paid to ensuring an adequate supply of compound feed for calves.

The Agriculture and Food Ministry and the regional authorities have strengthened oversight of livestock management during cold weather. Monitoring groups have been set up.
