MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) – Nikolai Leshik, head of the main crop production department of the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry, has outlined factors behind good harvest in Belarus at a press conference dedicated to the Day of Agriculture and Processing Industry, BelTA has learned.

The agricultural work is in its final stage. “The targets and output for various products that we set at the beginning of the year have been practically achieved,” said Nikolai Leshik.

The harvest is approaching 11 million tonnes of grain, including rapeseed and corn. Over 5 million tonnes of sugar beet have been harvested, with over 1 million tonnes of rapeseed oilseeds threshed and some 10 million tonnes of grass forage produced.

Nikolai Leshik emphasized that the year had been challenging for agriculture throughout the entire period, but rural workers coped with the difficulties. “The early spring was followed by prolonged return frosts with very low temperatures of both air and soil. There were negative consequences like the loss of some plants and a reduced yield in our orchards. But it is not the first year that we see that farmers are able to respond to all adverse conditions and make prompt decisions to mitigate damage and achieve the set goals,” he added.

The potato harvest is complete, and the sugar beet harvest will wrap up literally in the next few days. However, corn is drying slower than in previous years due to high humidity. The required amount of haylage has been prepared, and the supply of flax fiber and sugar beet to processing enterprises continues.

Nikolai Leshik expressed gratitude to the workers of agriculture and processing industry for their coordinated work, as well as to the employees of the Interior Ministry, Emergencies Ministry and other bodies for their assistance in the harvesting campaign, and to scientists for their scientific support of the industry. Negative factors are taken into account when planning agricultural work. Scientists are developing plant varieties resistant to natural disasters, and farmers strictly adhere to technological regulations.

According to the specialist, the current season had good moisture supply, which helped the crops develop. In this regard, the weather was favorable. A long vegetation period was observed. In addition, work is constantly underway to improve the structure of crop rotation and the selection of crops. The machinery fleet is being updated. All these measures together have yielded good results, which farmers will use as a benchmark in the future seasons.
