MINSK, 8 April (BelTA) – Belarus plans to harvest at least 9.1 million tonnes of grain and about 5.2 million tonnes of sugar beets this year, Agriculture and Food Minister Sergei Bartosh told the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“We plan to harvest at least 9.1 million tonnes of grain; we also need to harvest 5.1-5.2 million tonnes of sugar beets to keep our processing enterprises busy. We have the necessary experience; we posted good results last year. Rapeseed output should be 1.15 million tonnes,” the minister said as he shared plans for the current agricultural year.

“The most important thing is to provide livestock with feed: the ratio is 32 centners of feed units per head. Our primary goal is to preserve the livestock. Today it is clear that livestock mortality is precisely due to the quantity and quality of feed. Weather conditions are favorable; spring has come early, therefore, we will be able to embark on feed production earlier and to produce the necessary amount of it. We are set to plant more than 1.2 million hectares of corn, of which about 270-275 [thousand hectares] will be used for grain, the rest, or almost 1 million tonnes of corn, will be used as feed,” noted Sergei Bartosh.
