Levshunov: The situation in Ukraine will hopefully get stabilized in 2016

MINSK, 4 January (BelTA) – I hope that the situation in Ukraine will stabilize in 2016, Oleg Levshunov, a member of the permanent commission for labor and social affairs of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, told BelTA.

"I think many will agree that the most important event of 2015 in Belarus was the presidential election. The past year was also remarkable for the "Normandy" format talks in Minsk and regular meetings of the contact group to resolve the situation in Ukraine, which are already traditionally held in the Belarusian capital," the MP said. "Any problems must be resolved by peaceful means only. I say this as a veteran of the war in Afghanistan. We know what the war there ended with: people were killed but Afghanistan is still far away from peaceful life. If we talk about Ukraine, our sister nation, I, first of all, expect that the situation in the country will get stabilized in 2016,” Oleg Levshunov said.

"Armed conflicts have never contributed to the peaceful solution of problems, and the Belarusians understand this very well. Together with other nations of the Soviet Union we fought against fascism, and in 2015 we celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory. Amid terror attacks, and armed conflicts around the world, the countries and peoples must be united as never before and not forget the feat of the Soviet people,” the lawmaker said.

Oleg Levshunov believes that 2016 will not be easy for Belarus in terms of economy. However, the Belarusians need to stay united and continue to work for the good of the country. “I hope we will enjoy new victories in sport next year. I am convinced that the parliamentary campaign will be organized at a high level. I would like to wish a stable, peaceful, and prosperous year to our citizens,” the MP said.
