Belarus urges OSCE to make realistic assessment of roots of regional crises

MINSK, 29 June (BelTA) – There is a need to make realistic assessment of the reasons of the crises in the region, Belarus' Permanent Representative to the OSCE Valery Voronetsky said when speaking at the 2016 OSCE Annual Security Review Conference held in Vienna on28-30 June, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.

At the opening session Valery Voronetsky said that the OSCE area is engulfed in multi-level crises of different nature: from international terrorism and migration to regional conflicts and economic challenges. He focused on the crisis of confidence and the differences in the approaches to security which transformed into the build-up of military capabilities, growth of military and political tensions amid the ongoing erosion of the mechanisms on arms control and confidence- and security-building measures. The Belarusian diplomat also noted that the unilateral deployment of the missile defense system in Europe undermines the principle of the indivisibility of security.

The Belarusian diplomat called for realistic assessment of the causes underlying the crises in the OSCE area and the reasons for the ineffectiveness of anti-crisis mechanisms of the organization. Valery Voronetsky said that there was a need to increase the positive unifying potential accumulated during the fight against transnational threats and challenges, to restore the viability of arms control regimes and confidence- and security-building measures to ensure security without the build-up of military capabilities and military presence, and to build up mutual trust through economic compatibility, dialogue and interaction between the various integration associations and processes in the OSCE area.

Belarus' Permanent Representative to the OSCE stressed that a reliable European trade and economic architecture is an integral component of the pan-European security where there will be no place for sanctions and dividing lines.

The OSCE Annual Security Review Conference focuses on persistent security challenges throughout the OSCE area and ways to give new impetus for conflict resolution, confidence building and countering transnational threats.
