Minsk to host CIS Open Cup - World Cup Taekwondo ITF 5-7 December

MINSK, 3 December (BelTA) – On 5-7 December Minsk will play host to the CIS Open Cup - World Cup Taekwondo ITF (non-Olympic version). The tournament under the auspices of the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) will gather more than 1,000 athletes from 13 countries, which will be a record number for the competitions of such level, the organizers told a press conference on 3 December, BelTA has learned.

Competing in the event will be athletes from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Finland, and Estonia.

Presenting the tournament, the head of the sports and tourism department of Minsk City Hall Sergei Furmanov said that such a representative event in Minsk will contribute to the image of the Belarusian capital as a city that can host any event. According to him, the city authorities have supported the Taekwondo tournament, given the increased interest in it in the country.

As was reported at the press conference, the Belarus Taekwondo League and the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) have undertaken the major part of financing. The tournament will feature individual and team competitions for Pattern (complex formal exercises); and individual and team competitions sparring (matsogi). The Executive Director of the Belarus Taekwondo League Vyacheslav Berzhets said that competitions will be held in four age groups.

The venue of the event will be the velodrome facility of Minsk Arena. It is big enough to organize six competition places. Grand opening will take place on 6 December (13h00). The ceremony will feature demonstration fights by the winners of various competitions according to the professional Taekwondo rules. When asked about possible appearance of famous Belarusian Taekwondo fighter Arman-Marshall Silla, Vyacheslav Berzhets said that this is not planned because he primarily does the WTF Olympic version and is now focused on training for the qualifying competitions for the Games.

The CIS Open Cup competitions will start at 10h00 on 5, 6 and 7 December. The current tournament was once the Belarus Taekwondo ITF Cup. It has been held since 2006, and initially brought together not more than 300 participants from four countries.

Belarus has fighter both in WTF-Taekwondo (an Olympic sport) and ITF-Taekwondo (not an Olympic sport). The Belarusian organizations specializing in these two types of Taekwondo cooperate among themselves and the athletes try to compete in both sports.
