ISMF allows Belarusian athletes to participate in Olympic qualifying events

MINSK, 4 December (BelTA) - The International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF) has allowed Belarusian and Russian athletes to participate in international competitions of the 2024/25 season, provided they receive neutral status, BelTA learned from TASS.

Ski mountaineering competitions will debut in the Olympic program in Italy in 2026, where 36 athletes (18 men and 18 women) will compete for medals at the Games. Ski mountaineering is a winter sport in which athletes complete a mountain course at speed. This discipline consists of an ascent and descent: climbing uphill on skis and without them, and downhill skiing.

Belarusian and Russian athletes who wish to receive neutral status should write a corresponding application to the International Ski Mountaineering Federation and attach a number of documents to it. If the athletes successfully pass the check, they will be allowed to return to the world stage as neutral individual athletes.

As of today, no other international federation for winter Olympic sports has given the chance to Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in international events even in a neutral status.
