MINSK, 14 October (BelTA) - The LIEBHERR Table Tennis European Championships concluded in Austria’s Schwechat on 13 October, BelTA has learnt.
Belarus Vladimir Samsonov (world No.15) played two matches on 13 October. The leader of the Belarusian national team won against Greece’s Panagiotis Gionis (64) in the semifinal 4:2 (11:4, 11:9, 10:12, 11:8, 7:11, 11:8). However, in the final match the 37-year-old Belarusian was blanked by Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov 0:4 (4:11, 7:11, 10:12, 8:11).
Earlier Belarus did not make it to the men’s team final of the European Championships and had to settle for bronze together with Russia. Germany won that competition while Greece came in second.
Vladimir Samsonov became the European champion six times in different events, including three times in the men’s singles in 1998, 2003 and 2005.
On the women’s side 2012 European champion, Belarus’ Victoria Pavlovich, lost to Germany’s Ying Han in the quarterfinal 3:4 (12:14, 5:11, 11:8, 11:1, 10:12, 11:9, 11:13).
Sweden’s Li Fen won the women’s singles event after overpowering Germany’s Xiaona Shan in the final.
