Azarenka reaches Berlin second round

MINSK, 16 June (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 16 Victoria Azarenka moved to the second round of the Grass Court Championships Berlin 2021 after triumphing over Germany's world number 129 Andrea Petkovic, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian needed to overturn a 3-5 deficit in the second set to progress in a match that lasted for an hour and 45 minutes.

In the match for a quarterfinal spot Victoria Azarenka will face Germany's world number 27 Angelique Kerber who defeated Japanese qualifier Misaki Doi, 6-2, 6-1.

Belarus' world number 4 Aryna Sabalenka will kick off her grass court campaign in the German capital in the second round where she will take on world number 28 Madison Keys of the United States who defeated world number 149 Magdalena Frech of Poland 6-3б 6-4.

Belarusian Victoria Azarenka and Aryna Sabalenka went off to a good start in the doubles event as well, taking a solid win over the Czech duo of Karolina Muchova and Karolina Pliskova, 6-1, 6-3. In the quarterfinal Azarenka and Sabalenka will play Petra Martic of Croatia and Shelby Rogers of the United States.

The tournament in Berlin will be over on 20 June.
