2026 Winter Olympics kick off in Italy

MINSK, 5 February (BelTA) - The competitive program of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games got underway in Italy on 4 February, BelTA has learned.

Mixed doubles curling participants are the first to take to the main stage of the four-year event. The matches are held at the Olympic Stadium in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The evening program on 4 February included four preliminary round games: Sweden vs. South Korea, the UK vs. Norway, Canada vs. the Czech Republic, and Estonia vs. Switzerland. Earlier, a men’s downhill training session took place on the Olympia delle Tofane alpine ski slope. Men’s luge practice runs took place on 4 February.

Mixed doubles curling matches will continue on 5 February. Also on Thursday, the group stage of the women’s hockey tournament will commence, and the finalists in the snowboard big air competition will be determined. The opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics will begin on 6 February at 22:00 Minsk time.

The first medal events will be contested on Saturday, with two Belarusian athletes set to compete. Cross-country skier Hanna Karaliova will compete in the 10+10km skiathlon, and speed skater Maryna Zuyeva will compete in the 3000m race. The Belarusian delegation to the Games also includes figure skater Viktoriia Safonova, alpine skier Maria Shkanova, and freestyle skiers Hanna Huskova, Anna Derugo and Anastasia Andrianova.
