What did Lukashenko offer Milosevic in 1998?

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – The latest episode of the documentary series Time Chose Us aired by the Belarus 1 TV channel narrated about the Belarusian president’s visit to Yugoslavia in 1998, BelTA has learned.
At the very beginning of 1998, the Belarusian president paid an official visit to the Union Republic of Yugoslavia. The trade between the countries was as little as $10 million, although in 1991 it was 60 times higher. The goal of the visit was to reinvigorate mutual trade. Aleksandr Lukashenko said that it was high time to step up economic cooperation to match it with the political dialogue.

“Our cooperation in economy is lagging behind the level of political dialogue. We agreed to bring the economy to the level of the negotiation process and our policy,” the Belarusian leader told reporters at the time.

A number of important talks were held in Belgrade: with President Slobodan Milosevic, the leaders of the Yugoslav government and Parliament. The Belarusian-Yugoslav statement was adopted as a result of the visit. The delegation members also signed several intergovernmental agreements.

Belarus was to supply optics and foodstuffs. There were also big plans in construction. Moreover, the parties decided to open embassies in both countries.

In 1998, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Economic Relations Mikhail Marinich remarked in a conversation with journalists that Belarus and Serbia should develop military-technical cooperation. He must have had a second sight: 13 months later the NATO coalition started criminal bombing of Belgrade, destroying the military objects.
