MINSK, 15 November (BelTA) – Over the year, Belarus has recorded a total of 50 deaths of migrants that the European Union pushed back to the country, State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich said at the international conference in Minsk to discuss regional cooperation in combating illegal migration, BelTA has learned.
"We are not interested in building fences on our border, harassing , humiliating, beating or killing migrants... Over the last year, we have recorded 50 deaths of migrants that the EU pushed back to Belarus. Hundreds of people were maimed. We should jointly seek ways to solve this problem," Aleksandr Volfovich said.
He emphasized that it was not Belarus that gave rise to illegal migration. Belarus is not the cause of the problem. Amid the military conflict in Ukraine and other factors, the country has become the key corridor for migrants heading for the EU.
