Volfovich: CSTO partners are very receptive to Belarus' initiatives

MINSK, 28 November (BelTA) – CSTO partners are very receptive to Belarus' initiatives, State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich told journalists on the sidelines of the joint meeting of the CSTO Foreign Ministers Council, the Defense Ministers Council and the Committee of Secretaries of the Security Councils in Astana, BelTA has learned.

“For Belarus, the main thing is another opportunity to use the international platform and prestige of the CSTO to convey our position on the formation of a multipolar world, mutual respect for all states. Today we constantly talk about and take practical steps to build a transparent Eurasian security architecture,” Aleksandr Volfovich told journalists.

He noted that having talked to his counterparts, he saw that they are receptive to proposals and initiatives of the Belarusian side and are on board with Belarus' vision of the military-political situation around the CSTO. “The initiatives that Belarus puts forward are taken very seriously, they are relevant,” the state secretary emphasized.

Aleksandr Volfovich also believes it is important to raise the status of the CSTO in the international arena.

An important issue on the agenda concerns the joint plan to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

When asked about the absence of the Armenian delegation at the summit and the possible impact of this fact on the effectiveness of joint work, Aleksandr Volfovich said: “The position of the Armenian side will not hinder the work to adopt documents. It is sad that one of the CSTO members will not be at the meetings today. But I think that this will not significantly affect the event in general, as well as the adoption of the documents.”

The heads of the foreign and defense ministries of Belarus, Maksim Ryzhenkov and Viktor Khrenin, also took part in the joint meeting.

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko arrived in Kazakhstan on a working visit on 27 November. In Astana, the Belarusian head of state will take part in a meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council on 28 November.
