Brest Oblast, Serbia seek closer ties in economy, healthcare

BREST, 18 February (BelTA) – During a meeting on 18 February, Brest Oblast Governor Piotr Parkhomchik and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Serbia to Belarus Ilina Vukajlović discussed closer cooperation between Brest Oblast and Serbia in economy and social welfare, BelTA has learned.

“We have traditionally enjoyed good and warm relations with Serbia,” Piotr Parkhomchik emphasized. “We see potential in many areas. We intend to continue our work and maintain the momentum.” In particular, Brest Oblast proposes that Serbian partners develop cooperation with the free economic zone (FEZ) Brest and the industrial parks in Baranovichi and Pinsk. Interaction in healthcare and tourism is a priority. The Brest Oblast governor suggested considering the possibility of Serbian schoolchildren visiting the National Center for Patriotic Education at the Brest Fortress.

“I am very glad to be here today. I had the opportunity to see the regional clinic [Brest Oblast Clinical Hospital], talk with the governor, and discuss issues and possible areas of cooperation. If you ask Belarusians and Serbs what interests them most, we know what they would answer: everything! They are absolutely interested in everything. This includes healthcare, trade, joint ventures, and experience exchange. As an embassy, we are happy to work on these ties between people and businesses,” the ambassador said. According to her, the parties aim to gradually restore the contacts that existed before the COVID pandemic.
“Brest Oblast has a very strong industrial base and agricultural industry. We have a great interest in it,” the diplomat noted. She placed special emphasis on Belarusian healthcare, highlighting the high level of medical care and the professionalism of doctors. Ilina Vukajlović was impressed by the Brest Oblast Clinical Hospital. In her observation, this is characteristic of healthcare facilities in Belarus. “Many Serbian patients come to Belarus for medical services and assistance. They are satisfied not only with the service but also with the humane attitude they have experienced. It seems to me that tourism and all other areas that follow from this will begin to develop from here,” the ambassador said.

According to Ilina Vukajlović, she has already begun thinking about her next visit to Brest, the program of which will be more detailed and include visits to enterprises.
