Vileika joins Child-Friendly City initiative

MINSK, 1 June (BelTA) – Vileika has joined the Child-Friendly City global initiative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On 1 June Vileika hosted an event dedicated to Children's Day. It was arranged by the National Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals and UNICEF. During this event Vileika signed an agreement to join the Child-Friendly City initiative.

During the event, 50 pulse oximeters were donated to Vileika District Hospital on behalf of the National Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals. According to the foreign ministry, the humanitarian aid is meant to help Belarus combat the coronavirus infection and is part of the international technical assistance project to support the functioning of the architecture for managing the process of achieving Sustainable Development Goals in the Republic of Belarus-2.

In 1996 the Child Friendly Cities Initiative was launched to act on the resolution passed during the second UN Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II).The Conference declared that the well-being of children is the ultimate indicator of a healthy habitat.

All in all, 28 Belarusian cities, including Minsk, Gomel, Brest, Grodno, Mogilev, joined the initiative. These cities run programs and policies that seek to reduce the risks that children face in urban areas.
