MOSCOW, 20 November (BelTA) – The Commission on Security and Defense of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia convened in Russia’s Petrozavodsk on 20 November, the Parliamentary Assembly’s press service told BelTA.

According to the press service, “The deputies reviewed the implementation of one of the priority areas of ensuring the Union State’s security, which is ensuring the internal stability and resilience of the member states (Section IV of the Union State Security Concept, approved by Resolution No. 14 of the Supreme State Council of the Union State on 6 December 2024). The parliamentarians noted that the Ministries of Internal Affairs of Belarus and Russia, as well as the border agencies of the two countries, are successfully implementing joint programs and action plans in migration policy, information security, and crime control, exchanging experience, and conducting joint operational and preventive measures.”

The deputies also discussed the implementation of key Union State defense and security programs, including: “Improvement of military infrastructure facilities planned for joint use to support the regional task force of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation” for 2023-2026; “Modernization of logistics facilities planned for joint use to support the regional task force of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation” for 2023-2027; and “Development of border security of the Union State” for the period 2023-2027.

During their visit, deputies of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, Gennady Lepeshko and Andrei Krupenkin, along with other Union State parliamentarians, met with Artur Parfenchikov, the Head of the Republic of Karelia. At the meeting, Gennady Lepeshko announced plans to establish new border facilities on the western borders of the Union State. “We do not intend to compete with the West in an arms race, but our Union State is growing stronger, and cooperation in various spheres, including the military, is developing by leaps and bounds,” he emphasized.

The parliamentarians also laid a wreath and flowers at the “Mass Grave and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with the Eternal Flame of Glory” memorial complex in Petrozavodsk and visited Petrozavodsk Presidential Cadet School, where they spoke with young cadets.
