MINSK, 12 January (BelTA) – The first direct flight operated by Belarusian air carrier Belavia received a ceremonial welcome upon arrival in Phuket, Thailand, the airline’s press service told BelTA.

Airport officials cut a symbolic ribbon, handed out commemorative gifts to passengers, and presented flowers to the crew. Greeting the aircraft in the cornflower-blue colors were airline representatives, Thai tourism authorities, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Kingdom of Thailand Vladimir Borovikov.

Ahead of the first flight, Belavia held a business meeting with representatives of the Belarusian diplomatic mission and Thai partners. The prospects for developing the route and opportunities for cooperation between the tourism markets of Belarus and Thailand were discussed.

The airline continues to expand its route network in Southeast Asia. The first flight from Minsk to Phuket departed on 11 January. The aircraft type is the long-haul Airbus A330-200. The flight was fully booked (281 passengers). The high demand was expected and is attributed to significant interest from the Belarusian tourist market. The launch of the route was the result of joint work with government agencies.

“The airline is very grateful to the government, particularly the relevant ministry, as well as the foreign policy department for their support in implementing the project,” the head of the airline’s marketing and foreign economic activity service Yekaterina Radishevskaya said during passenger check-in.

The possibility of organizing direct flights was discussed during the first-ever official visit of the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov to the Kingdom of Thailand on 16 July 2025. Thailand has become the fourth destination in Southeast Asia launched by Belavia in the last four months. Previously, the airline launched flights to Hainan Island, Vietnam (Phu Quoc), and Sri Lanka. And on 8 January, the carrier performed its first-ever flight to Pattaya, with the long-haul Airbus A330-200 carrying 275 passengers.

Minsk-Phuket flights will operate every 10-11 days. The approximate flight time is about 10 hours, and around 11 hours on the return leg. Two meals are provided for passengers. Tickets for flights to Pattaya and Phuket Island are available as part of tour packages; detailed information about flights and costs can be obtained from tour operators.

Also last week, Belavia resumed flights to Tel Aviv after an almost four-year break.
