Tajikistan lauded for great successes over 30 years of independence

MINSK, 9 September (BelTA) - The international conference to mark the 30th anniversary of the state independence of the Republic of Tajikistan and the 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Belarus was held at the CIS Executive Committee in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

The event presented the history and achievements of Tajikistan over the decades of state independence. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Republic of Belarus Mahmadsharif Haqdod highlighted the successes of Tajikistan in political, economic and socio-cultural avenues, and also milestones inthe Belarusian-Tajik cooperation.

“The proclamation of state independence was the greatest event in the thousand-year history of the Tajik people and at the same time a serious test in a matter of building a free, independent state and reviving national traditions of statehood,” the diplomat said. “After gaining independence, the young sovereign state had to deal with a bloody civil war, which was imposed from the outside, which led to severe socio-economic, political and spiritual consequences, significant human casualties, and which seriously affected the course of domestic and foreign policy of sovereign Tajikistan. The session of the Supreme Soviet held in November 1992, the most difficult time, elected a new leader - Emomali Rahmon. He laid the foundations of peace and harmony, unity, and the nation-state. An end was put to the civil war. Thanks to the wisdom of the Tajik people, and the tireless efforts of the president, the nation managed to avoid the split and disintegration. The greatest achievement in the history of the country was the signing of the General Agreement on Peace and National Accord on 27 June 1997. For the 30 years of independence, the Republic of Tajikistan has come a long way to become a young state, overcoming the difficulties of the transition period, implementing reforms, creating a favorable basis for economic development."

The exhibition "Creativity and Culture of the Republic of Tajikistan" organized by the Embassy of Tajikistan in Minsk was opened on the sidelines of the conference.

The event brought together representatives of the parliament, government bodies, universities of Belarus, ambassadors, permanent and plenipotentiary representatives of the CIS member states, students and representatives of the Tajik diaspora.
