Silver for Belarus at China College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition

MINSK, 24 October (BelTA) - Aleksei Zaitsev, the finalist of the BRSM national youth project 100 Ideas for Belarus, the graduate student of Skaryna Gomel State University, won the silver medal with his project Mobius Station in the final of the 5th China College Students' Internet Plus Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition held at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, Second Secretary of the BRSM Central Committee Oleg Dikun told BelTA.

The development of the young innovator involves the creation of an autonomous SMF-02 station, which can be used in agricultural fields with a remote control device. The special program accumulates solar and wind energy to collect meteorological data and to employ crop protection systems. The project is very important for the agricultural industry and can be used to monitor crop growth with the help of one or two operators.

The mechanism to transmit information through sensors and logistic scheme proposed by the Belarusian developer is 10 to 12 times cheaper than the analogues in Western Europe and the United States. The big advantage of the system is self-sufficiency. “It can work for up to five years without correction or technical support and recharging. After reading and transmitting the data, the sensor automatically goes into sleep mode to save energy. By monitoring plant growth, this system can also identify the needs in mineral fertilizers: when and how much to ensure that growth meets the plans and standards,” Oleg Dikun noted.

During the competition, the format of evaluation was significantly different from the usual one. Presentations of the projects were held online. The jury and experts worked remotely, in specially equipped auditoriums so that no one could influence the results. For the convenience of the jury's work, the organizers equipped about 45 special independent platforms with focus on various tracks to host online broadcast from presentation sites,” Oleg Dikun informed.

The Belarusian competed with 20 developers, including from the universities of Cambridge, Sydney, Toronto and other educational institutions. “Our representative was asked a number of questions related to the transmission of the signal from the operator to the sensor and back,” Oleg Dikun said.

The final of the competition was held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou on 12-15 October. Taking part in the event were about 6,000 people who showcased some 1492 projects. The selection stages of the competition ran from March to October. This year's competition went international, bringing together young entrepreneurs from around the world and setting a new record in the number of participants: 4.5 million students and 1 million teams from 3,343 universities and colleges of 124 countries.

Since 2015, the competition has been organized by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. This year, the BRSM Youth Union acted as a specially invited co-organizer thanks to the cooperation of the youth organization with the All-China Youth Federation. Representatives of Belarus made part of the jury, and the organization presented the national youth project "100 Ideas for Belarus" in China for the first time.

Fifteen gold and 45 silver medals were awarded at the competition final. The main objective of the project is to stimulate the interest of university students in innovation and entrepreneurship and to promote the integration of education in the sector. An important component of the event is to create a platform for international cooperation of students in solving global problems.
