Sergeyenko: CSTO aims to solve conflicts through political means

MINSK, 3 June (BelTA) - The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is a flexible instrument for ensuring sovereignty and independence, aimed at preventing and resolving conflicts primarily through political means, Igor Sergeyenko, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, said at the meeting of the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 3 June, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

According to him, there is an increasing need for a unifying agenda, centered on ensuring global security, broad economic cooperation, cultural and civilizational interaction built on the principles of trust, equality and non-discrimination. “This is the agenda that makes the essence of the CSTO and its parliamentary dimension,” he emphasized.

“We have never positioned ourselves as a military-political bloc with a rigid hierarchy of members and an aggressive orientation. Our organization is a flexible instrument for ensuring sovereignty and independence, aimed at preventing and resolving conflicts primarily through political means. Understanding and taking into account the interests of the parties, showing mutual support and respect are the main diplomatic tools used in the work of the CSTO,” Igor Sergeyenko said. “This is fully in line with the principles on which Belarus' foreign policy course is based,” he said.
