Russian diplomat: Trump, Putin, Zelensky should meet in Belarus

MINSK, 15 September (BelTA) – Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky should have a trilateral meeting in Belarus, the Soviet and Russian diplomat, Doctor of Historical Sciences, political analyst Nikolai Platoshkin said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Nikolai Platoshkin believes that Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko could make such a proposal. At the same time, the Belarusian side states that it is not seeking a mediator role, although it is eager to arrange negotiations at the highest level.

“They all seemed to agree to meet after Alaska, but now they cannot decide where: one does not like this, the other does not like that. Belarus is a Slavic country. What can Zelensky have against it? Especially since Lukashenko has said many times that Belarus advocates peace talks to end the conflict. So, it is completely impossible to call him a warmonger. And, by the way, Trump could then make a stop in Brussels to brief his friends [on the outcomes of the talks],” the political analyst said.

Nikolai Platoshkin further stated that arranging this meeting could serve as a ‘peace offensive’ to counter the buildup of provocations. And this is the only way to respond to them, the diplomat believes.

“Our response to these provocations should not be helpless hand-wringing and asking ‘what are they up to?’ That approach gets us nowhere. We must counter with a peace offensive, in my opinion. A diplomatic offensive. For example, by proposing to hold a trilateral meeting in Belarus,” the expert added. “I think Trump would agree. So would Putin, naturally. If Zelensky says that Belarus is not suitable, that would be completely unacceptable.”
