Professor explains why the Ukraine conflict and EU split benefit Britain

MINSK, 14 December (BelTA) – Britain has long ceased to be a U.S. ally and has instead become an orchestrator of the Ukraine conflict, Elena Ponomareva, Doctor of Political Science, Professor at MGIMO (Moscow State Institute of International Relations), said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The political scientist observed that over the past century, Britain has cultivated an image of a great European power deeply involved in resolving international issues. “Britain has managed to create a kind of cargo cult in a number of regions, where London is viewed as the main global player, from whom nothing can be hidden and which exerts secret influence everywhere. On the other hand, it is often precisely this carefully crafted image that shapes public opinion,” stated Elena Ponomareva.

According to the MGIMO professor, the U.K. is now one of America’s primary opponents in efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict and reform the global order. “The main stumbling block in this process, including the resolution of crises and conflicts, not least in Ukraine, is not Russia, nor China, nor Iran. It is London,” said Elena Ponomareva. “London has long ceased to be a U.S. ally and is even something of a conflict orchestrator, employing various methods, tools, and technologies.”

What advantage does Britain gain from prolonging the conflict in Ukraine? “If the U.S. reaches an agreement with Russia, London loses its significance as a link in the Euro-Atlantic region, as a consequential player. Who would need this small island, with no resources, no serious army, and many problems? Therefore, the British strategy is to prolong the conflict: as long as there is conflict, Britain is needed. It sabotages any negotiating processes or agreements. It destabilizes the European security system because if Europe is calm, what use is Britain? It tries to keep Washington in the orbit of war through various structures; they have experience in this,” the political scientist explained.

She added that London is not averse to PR stunts, including those targeting Trump, to destabilize the situation. The country is also conducting intelligence activities and merging its military-industrial complex with financial institutions. “It is no coincidence that enormous funds have been allocated to Britain for UAV production, for example. This fusion of the pound and the gun produces an economy that can only thrive on war, which means London needs war,” Elena Ponomareva emphasized.

At the same time, London as a masterful provocateur is capable of influencing Russia and post-Soviet states through its well-developed network of organizations prepared to carry out various manipulations. “Of course, it can also influence the Russian side with various provocations. And to make Washington hesitate, it can stage something against Russia or Belarus, framing them as the culprits behind the disruption of negotiations. Incidentally, we must not forget that London has a 100-year partnership agreement with Kiev,” Elena Ponomareva noted.

She pointed out that such a document grants the U.K. the right to interfere in Ukraine’s domestic politics and to “pull the strings.”

Unlike America, Elena Ponomareva argued, Britain is constructing its own world order. “While the United States proclaims its own new world order, the British are building their own world drawing a new map of Europe. They need a belt of states [hostile to Russia]; they need to rely on the most Russophobic regimes,” said the MGIMO professor.

She cited Latvia as an example, where proposals have been made to strip citizenship from those who do not share the state’s values. Such people might be identified by their visits to Soviet monuments on certain dates.

The political scientist concluded that Britain will not indefinitely support such destructive forces. “But at the moment, London is an opponent of a peaceful settlement for a number of reasons, and an opponent not so much of Russia as of the United States. I think Trump understands this perfectly well,” Elena Ponomareva said.
