MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – The situation in Iran is the result of careful preparation: from strikes at sensitive points to looting by militants, Elena Ponomareva, Doctor of Political Science, Professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The expert described the situation in Iran as a pre-planned operation. “It is clearly a matter of thorough preparation, and moreover, strikes at very sensitive points, including, for example, arson attacks on mosques and the complex food situation. Militants operating in the streets are looting warehouses. And what do they do? They either set them on fire or slash open bags of rice and other grains, dumping them onto the road. That is, it is a matter of deliberately enhancing the factors of destabilization and crisis within Iran. And it is clear that this has been prepared for a long time. We are talking about the use, of course, of the Kurdish factor. And possibly, the role of other militants who, in particular, have undergone training in Afghanistan and other states,” Elena Ponomareva noted.

At the same time, the MGIMO professor emphasized that such blatant lawlessness could receive support from the population of the United States. “While various inquiries and polls are ongoing, the population is quite logically inclined to the idea that a strike against Iran is possible. By the way, this is very reminiscent of the situation around the Balkans. Before the 1999 bombings, an immense propaganda campaign targeted the Serbs, creating a huge imbalance: for every one or two pieces examining the Albanian side, there were around 300 mostly false anti-Serb publications. As a result of such a massive media attack, a poll was later conducted on whether one supported, for example, France’s, the UK’s, or Germany’s participation in the military operation against Yugoslavia. The overwhelming majority of respondents, naturally, spoke in favor of the operation. And here we have seen how hysteria around Iran has been fueled for many long years, not merely in recent months. Naturally, the public here may support these actions,” the expert explained.
