Over 600,000 tourists visit Brest Hero Fortress in 2024

BREST, 5 January (BelTA) - The Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex was visited by more than 600,000 people in 2024, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the memorial complex Yelena Mityukova told BelTA.

Those numbers included group and individual visits, participation in events hosted by the fortress. Over the year, employees of the memorial complex conducted excursions for more than 12,600 groups. “The number of visitors has increased significantly. This shows that the theme of war and peace in the year of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazis and the Victory Anniversary was interesting, relevant and in demand. The fortress hosted a lot of events and exhibition projects. We had more than 30 exhibitions in 2024. We presented our projects in museums in Russia, Finland, Vietnam and China,” Yelena Mityukova said.

Visitors come to Brest Fortress to learn more about the history of the legendary citadel on the Bug River, the history of the Great Patriotic War, to understand the value and fragility of peace. Apart from Belarusians, the fortress was visited by citizens of more than 25 countries last year. Most of them were Russians. The fortress welcomed visitors from the CIS countries, China, Vietnam, the United States, Myanmar, Algeria, Austria, Germany, Georgia, Iran, Italy, Israel, Canada, the Republic of Korea, Cuba, Latvia, Poland, Brazil, France, and Ukraine.

2025 is a special year for the Brest Fortress. First of all, the fortress will host events celebrating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Those events will include a scientific and practical conference, exhibitions from the funds of the memorial and partner museums, the Bolshoi Theater project “Emotional Diary of Memory”. This spring the performance will be shown at the Ceremonial Square. “The film His Name Was Not Listed based on the book by Boris Vasilyev was shot on the Brest Fortress grounds in 2024. The film is set to premiere in the Brest Fortress in May 2025. At least this information has been provided by members of the film crew,” the deputy director added.

The Brest Fortress restoration and preservation program will be continued with the help of the Union State budget. Work will also be continued to compile a dossier for the inclusion of the memorial complex in the UNESCO list.
