Over 35,000 people attend concert in Brest Fortress on 22 June

BREST, 22 June (BelTA) – The commemorative concert "Four years of a long journey..." dedicated to the Day of National Remembrance of the Victims of the Great Patriotic War and the Genocide of the Belarusian People in the Brest Hero Fortress was watched by more than 35,000 people, BelTA learned.

Head of the Belarus President Administration Dmitry Krutoi read out the address from Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko. The event was also attended by State Secretary of the Union State of Russia and Belarus Sergey Glazyev, Governor of Brest Oblast Piotr Parkhomchik, representatives of ministries and agencies, foreign delegations.

The Soviet people suffered enormous losses in the Great Patriotic War. Belarus lost every third person. The brunt of the attack on 22 June 1941 was fought back by border guards. In memory of the courage of their predecessors, the current generation of border guards, according to the established tradition, lit a torch from the Eternal Flame of the Brest Fortress and floated wreaths into the waters of the Bug River.
“This is a sacred place for our country. So is the date of 22 June. It was Sunday then. Coincidentally, today is also Sunday. The shortest night turned, unfortunately, into a three-year horror and hell for our country. Three million dead Belarusians call on us (actually from heaven) to honor their memory on this date every year,” Dmitry Krutoi said.

The audience saw a two-hour commemorative concert "Four years of a long journey..." It featured Belarusian and Russian artists. The audience saw the story of the Great Patriotic War through the prism of the past 84 years. The settings changed each other, evoking different feelings: the peaceful and carefree 21 June 1941, the ruthless invasion of the German war machine, the fuss and panic of the evacuation, the fight against the enemy, the loss and search for relatives, and liberation.
A rally dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic war finished in the Brest Fortress today, Russian Transport Minister Roman Starovoit said. “Every kilometer of the road that the rally covered is a reminder of the immortal feat of our people, those people who saved, helped and evacuated the wounded day and night. After the war, our heroes restored roads, bridges, buildings and cities and revived the life destroyed by the Nazis,” Roman Starovoit said.

The concert was followed by a flower ceremony at the Eternal Flame, a minute of silence and march-past by the servicemen through the Ceremonial Square.
