MINSK, 1 February (BelTA) – Air quality in Minsk in 2025 was assessed as good, Aleksandr Dragun, Chairman of the Minsk City Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, said at the committee’s annual board meeting.
Work to protect atmospheric air continued throughout 2025. “As of 1 January 2026, a total of 276 permits for emissions, including comprehensive environmental permits, set standards for permissible pollutant emissions into the atmosphere for users of natural resources who are legally required to hold such permits. All operators act in accordance with these permits,” he noted. Aleksandr Dragun added that in 2025, specialists carried out 214 administrative procedures for issuing emission permits and amending comprehensive environmental permits. Enterprises also implemented measures to effectively reduce emissions, including installing gas-cleaning equipment and eliminating emission sources, which will cut atmospheric pollutants by more than 829 tonnes annually.
The National Center for Analytical Environmental Control conducted sampling and measurements at 383 stationary sources in 2025. Results showed only two cases of exceeding permissible emission standards. “According to calculated air quality index values, pollution levels last year were generally assessed as very good, good, or moderate. Periods of satisfactory air quality were minimal and linked to increased particulate matter in the Uruchye district. There were no periods of poor or hazardous air quality. To prevent deterioration, districts were instructed to organize additional watering of city roads and apply optimal street-cleaning technologies,” Aleksandr Dragun emphasized.
He also noted that 24 emission sources in Minsk are subject to installation of automatic monitoring systems. “As of 1 January 2026, 16 sources are equipped with AMS, 14 of which are integrated into the National Information System for Automated Environmental Monitoring (RISAMOS) and transmit data. For two new AMS not yet included in RISAMOS, Minskenergo is conducting meteorological expertise and certification procedures. By 2028, eight more sources are scheduled to be equipped. No exceedances of permissible emissions were recorded in 2025 based on RISAMOS data, and monthly monitoring of AMS data submissions showed no violations,” Aleksandr Dragun summarized.
In addition, the share of electric transport in Minsk reached 58% in 2025, compared to only 40% in 2020.
