"On Point"
MINSK, 10 February (BelTA) – Andrei Bogodel, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Education and Science – Head of the Education and Methodology Department of the Faculty of the General Staff of the Armed Forces at the Military Academy of Belarus, reflected on Belarus’ potential role in the Board of Peace in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The expert believes that key issues in international relations should be resolved within the UN and not through other new organizations or associations. Andrei Bogodel noted that he was initially skeptical about Belarus joining the Board of Peace but later studied the issue more deeply. “I sat down and read the charter. It’s a very interesting charter,” he said. “Remember, when we were kids, we used to form squads, one house against another, and I wrote similar charters when I was 12. If you reread it [the Board of Peace charter], it feels like it was written by a 12-year-old. It talks about money, and it says, ‘I will always be the squad leader’. Aleksandr Grigoryevich [Lukashenko] understood right away that he could join. I don’t know who will be the chairman of this Board of Peace in three years, but those who tried to outmaneuver Lukashenko are nowhere to be seen today.”
Andrei Bogodel emphasized that, by all rights, the president of Belarus had to be included in the Board of Peace. “Lukashenko just had to be there. Firstly, two countries, Russia and China, were left out. Our interests are aligned with the interests of these two countries. Who will lobby for them in this organization? I think we understand it perfectly well. Trump understands perfectly well whose interests Lukashenko will represent. These are not only the interests of Belarus, but also those of his allies. The president has recently mentioned Russia, and then noted: ‘As long as China and Belarus exist, we will have not only partnerships, but much closer relations.’ And this is not just empty talk. Everyone knows perfectly well the caliber of our president who is there [in the Board of Peace],” the expert said.
Andrei Bogodel also outlined the national interests the country’s leader would defend in the Board of Peace. “You’re the president, the people have been voting for you for over 30 years. Your job is to ensure stability in our republic, to push for the lifting of sanctions against us, against Belavia and Belaruskali. This isn’t about Lukashenko personally, it’s about our country. This is important, and we must take advantage of it.”
Furthermore, a president is also the commander-in-chief of his country. The expert argues that a president’s job is to ensure security in his country no matter what it takes. And the president of Belarus understands this better than anyone, which is why he did everything not just right, but more than right.
Andrei Bogodel once again noted that the global situation is becoming increasingly perplexing. “Politics has become so confusing today! It’s even unclear whether international institutions work, but what’s definitely working is the interaction between heads of state. I emphasize: heads of state, not other decision-makers. And today, Trump, Xi Jinping, and Putin all speak directly with Lukashenko. And name another leader in Europe with whom the three world powers speak like this,” Andrei Bogodel emphasized.
The governments of many countries see Belarus as being at the epicenter of global events. “This bothers those from the Lublin Triangle. They try to follow suit, but fail. After all, the Lublin Triangle was created in 2020, in June or July, precisely to invite the Republic of Belarus to join it and thus cut off this balcony. And then Kaliningrad Oblast would be put to rest. That’s why they need Belarus,” the expert concluded.
