KGB: Japanese spy cooperates with investigation

MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) – The Japanese spy is actively cooperating with the investigation, Chief of the Investigative Office of Belarus' State Security Committee (KGB) Konstantin Bychek said in the program “The Failure of a Samurai from Tokyo” aired by the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“The State Security Committee detained Japanese citizen Nakanishi Masatoshi on suspicion of being associated with foreign intelligence. While in our country, he collected and transmitted military intelligence information to the Japanese special service. In particular, this information was about the Belarusian military infrastructure, the movement of troops and military equipment, the developments on the southern border, etc.,” said Konstantin Bychek. In addition, the foreign intelligence agency also considered recruiting Belarusian citizens who have access to state secrets.

During the investigation, which is currently nearing completion, conclusive and irrefutable evidence of Nakanishi Masatoshi’s illegal activities was obtained, Konstantin Bychek said. “Correspondence between him and the center was found on the seized equipment. It contained reports on accomplished tasks, financial reports, etc. In addition, multiple meetings of the foreigner with representatives of the foreign intelligence service operating in the Republic of Belarus under diplomatic cover were recorded,” he emphasized.

According to the KGB officer, Nakanishi Masatoshi was charged with committing a crime under Article 358-1 (intelligence activity) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. “The accused is being held at a KGB pre-trial detention center, he is actively cooperating with the investigation and giving detailed testimony about his illegal activities,” Konstantin Bychek added.
