MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – Sanctions must be lifted and friendly relations restored, Ulrich Singer, a German politician, member of the Bavarian State Parliament said on the air of the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.
“We strongly support the lifting of sanctions as soon as possible. Borders must be opened, trade resumed. [What is happening now] is harmful to us, particularly to Europe. We cannot live in isolation. We closed the borders, built an iron curtain. We have a recession in Germany, people are losing their jobs at factories. Of course, this is very bad for us,” Ulrich Singer stressed. He noted that Belarus has advantageous opportunities for trade with other countries, particularly with China. “It is essential to lift the sanctions and once again live together in friendship,” he believes. He also pointed out that Germany has faced economic problems as a result of imposing sanctions.
Ulrich Singer also that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is gaining increasing popularity in the country. “People understand that we are a democratic force and that we have solutions to the current situation, which requires solutions. We want the sanctions lifted. We are committed to peace. The people want that too,” he said.
The German politician supported restoring ties between Germany and Belarus, which are currently almost disappeared. “Much is not working right now. Only small, last bridges remain. For example, I come here to see with my own eyes how good and beautiful everything is. I will speak about this to my constituents at home. Your president is pursuing a wise policy. For instance, while we closed the borders, he abolished the visa regime. This is a small step and a small sign that will be very important when peaceful solutions are found and the conflict in Ukraine ends. I believe it is very important that Belarus has acted very calmly during this time,” Ulrich Singer concluded.
