MINSK, 18 March (BelTA) – Plans are in place to provide all consumers in Belarus with quality drinking water by 2025, Oleg Konon, director general of the national water supply and wastewater treatment company Belvodokanal, told a press conference on 18 March, BelTA has learned.
“The president and the government have instructed us to provide all Belarusians with quality drinking water by 2025. In 2016-2020, we commissioned 646 deferrization stations and reconnected 49 localities to centralized water distribution systems,” Oleg Konon said.
“As of now, 94.7% of Belarusians have access to quality drinking water,” he added.
In order to continue improving the quality of drinking water and developing the water distribution system, Belarus has adopted the new program “Comfortable housing and favorable environment” for 2021-2025 that includes the sub-program “Clean Water”. “The main goals of the sub-program are to ensure access to centralized water distribution systems and clean drinking water, improve the quality of wastewater treatment and the reliability of sewage systems. Plans are in place to build over 860 deferrization stations across the country, reconnect 109 localities to centralized water distribution systems, and renovate 70 wastewater treatment facilities by the end of 2025,” Oleg Konon noted.
These activities will be funded by the government, local authorities, and stakeholders. Belarus also plans to use loans from international financial organizations for this purpose.
