Expert opines on key economic challenges for Belarus’ 2030 development program

MINSK, 16 December (BelTA) – In a new episode of BelTA’s Nation Speaks project, Aleksei Avdonin, Chairman of the Board of the national state-public association Belarusian Knowledge Society, spoke about the economic challenges that are shaping the priorities of the country’s social and economic development program through 2030. The program is planned for approval at the second session of the 7th Belarusian People’s Congress.

Speaking about which economic challenges will be decisive when adopting the social and economic development program at the Belarusian People’s Congress on 18-19 December, Aleksei Avdonin emphasized that for any citizen and the state, key threats remain a decline in real wages, a sharp rise in inflation, the loss of savings, the loss of housing, the descent into homelessness, and even being deprived of access to food and clean water. These are the consequences of improperly structured social and economic processes when the state does not ensure balanced economic development, he said.

“We see this in Europe: corporations and banks have thrown workers onto the street, and they are sliding from need into destitution. Belarus will not allow such a dystopia, but it must soberly assess the risks. For Belarusians, wellbeing means personal savings, low inflation, rising wages, owning a car and an apartment, and the ability to renovate or build a country house. Over the past five years, despite COVID, lockdowns, and conflicts in Eastern Europe, the state has ensured an increase in wellbeing: inflation is minimal, wage growth rates are high. No Belarusian would say their situation has worsened, except perhaps due to laziness or personal financial mistakes,” the expert stated confidently.

He stressed that the state is doing everything to ensure a high level of social and economic security.
