Expert: Gaza, not Ukraine, to dominate UNGA agenda

MINSK, 23 September (BelTA) – The UN General Assembly will focus on Gaza, not Ukraine, PhD in Law, expert on security services Sergei Karnaukhov said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Commenting on whether the UN General Assembly’s work might include ideas that shift global thinking, Sergei Karnaukhov said: “I believe it is good that we will now hear from the UN General Assembly as the modern world cannot exist without the United Nations.” The expert added that it is difficult to imagine the scale of the challenges existing today.

“That is exactly why it is so important for the UN to continue to exist in any form, even severely weakened and ineffective. Because that leaves at least a possibility of its revival. We have virtually no other institutions for reconciling positions that prevent a global conflict. This makes the high-level week from 23 to 27 September, with its general debate, particularly important,” Sergei Karnaukhov said.

He emphasized that the main issue would not be Ukraine. “We must understand this. Because when it comes to Ukraine, the hypocrisy of Western nations, especially the UK, is clear for all the world to see. Gaza will be the main issue. And our permanent representative [of Russia to the UN] Vasily Nebenzya is already intensifying efforts. We are initiating numerous processes, calling to avoid visa restrictions for Palestinians, and much more,” Sergei Karnaukhov said.

“I am now closely following the UN missions in Palestine. I found out that there are none. The Red Cross, for instance, went there initially, tried to help people in some way. No one is forcing the UN to go inside Gaza. They could start working with Egypt. The city of Rafah, split between Gaza and Egypt, could become a corridor for humanitarian aid and civilian evacuation,” the expert noted.

Sergei Karnaukhov pointed out that over 1.5 million refugees have gathered in a city designed for 200,000 people. “These people fled the bombings in Gaza, among them the wounded, the sick, people lacking basic sanitation, along with infants and elderly people suffering from chronic diseases,” he said. “Complete silence, as if this city does not exist.”

“Naturally, Ukraine will do everything possible to destabilize the situation: accuse countries of indifference, call for countries to unite. And the main thing they will say is: here, nearby, in the center of Europe, there is another Gaza Strip. We will hear all this and must pay attention to it, but for people who understand well what is happening, this is empty words,” the expert stated.
