Expert explains Board of Peace importance for Belarus

MINSK, 21 January (BelTA) - Philosopher and political scientist Aleksei Dzermant shared his views on the significance of the Board of Peace for Belarus in a conversation with BelTA.

“The fact that Belarus was invited at the level of head of state is quite remarkable and significant. It indicates that the initiator of the Board of Peace, U.S. President Donald Trump, and the American leadership understand Belarus’ importance, authority, and role, at least within the region. After all, not all Eastern European states - the Baltic countries, for example - were invited to this board,” said Aleksei Dzermant.

The expert pointed out that this initiative is important for Belarus to convey its position. “We do not yet know exactly how the organization will ultimately function, but this platform is important for us to convey our position, minimize the risk of conflict in the region, and end the confrontation in Ukraine. I think that is what we will discuss on this platform. The president of Belarus has also emphasized this,” the political scientist said.

Aleksei Dzermant drew attention to the fact that the emergence of the Board of Peace may indicate the ineffectiveness of existing international organizations. “Perhaps the new format will be more effective. We hope that within this structure, the discussion will not be limited to the Middle East. We are interested in our immediate neighborhood, our region, and Ukraine, which is a source of instability. If such a platform emerges, we will use all our capabilities to ensure security on our borders and in our region. That is why our participation in the Board of Peace is necessary,” he concluded.

As BelTA reported Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, on behalf of the Republic of Belarus, signed a document on Belarus’ accession to the Board of Peace and on the implementation of the provisions of the Peace Board Charter. In full accordance with the procedure outlined in the letter from U.S. President Donald Trump.
