EAE chief talks about pandemic lessons

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) - Joint efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in this difficult time should be a key element of the new just system of multipolarity which is based on effective complementary cooperation of the EAEU member states, regional integration associations, Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Mikhail Myasnikovich said at an online High-level discussion on harnessing inter-regional integration for the SDGs which has been organized by Belarus, Barbados and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), BelTA has learned.

“The EAEU, together with the governments of the member states, has been implementing the strategic development program of the Eurasian economic integration through 2025, approved by the heads of state in December 2020. The 2025 strategy pays much attention to the social aspects closely related to the Sustainable Development Goals,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

He stressed that new areas of economic cooperation in education, science, healthcare, tourism and sports are included in the integration agenda.

“The coronavirus crisis has aggravated many problems of mankind, and in some cases it has actually thrown back some of the achievements of past years,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said. “At the same time, we have gained substantial experience in managing resources and securing sufficient medical supplies, medical products, crucial industrial and food products for personal use, manufacturing, and foreign trade,” he added.

According to Mikhail Myasnikovich, the Eurasian Economic Commission has been working to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Sanitary and epidemiological agencies of the EAEU member states have joined efforts to reach and execute untypical decisions to protect the population and ensure operation of the social sector and economy.
