Gomel to host Korean art exhibition

GOMEL, 9 June (BelTA) – The exhibition featuring works from the Oriental decorative and applied arts collection of the National Art Museum of Belarus will open at the Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace in Gomel on 12 June, BelTA learned from the Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble.

The exhibition will showcase more than 60 works created by contemporary artists using a variety of techniques, including wood carving, lacquer painting, porcelain and traditional painting.“Korean traditional culture is multifaceted. For more than two millennia, it has evolved in accordance with the principal concept of Far Eastern cultures – the pursuit of harmony, both internal and external,” representatives of the palace noted.

According to the organizers, the exhibition focuses on the auspicious symbolism of traditional Korean art of the Joseon Dynasty (14th century-late 19th century), highlighting its beauty and diversity through everyday objects such as jewelry boxes, porcelain bowls and traditional costumes. “Every pattern and symbol decorating these objects carries a profound meaning and conveys wishes for prosperity and well-being to future generations,” the institution said.

A special place in the exhibition is devoted to Minhwa, Korea’s traditional folk painting. Originating from the everyday life and customs of ordinary people, the genre was also frequently embraced by professional artists of the Dohwaseo royal painting academy.“With its vivid colors, decorative symbolism and nature-inspired motifs, Minhwa expresses aspirations for happiness, longevity, love and harmony. Through images of cranes and pine trees, lotus flowers and tigers, books and blossoms, visitors can sense the spirit of an ancient philosophy in which humanity and nature are inseparable,” the organizers explained.

The exhibition highlights the uniqueness of Korean traditional culture through its ornament and artistic imagery, while also revealing parallels between Belarusian and Korean cultural traditions in their shared appreciation of life and nature.

The exhibition will run through 27 September.
