MINSK, 22 October (BelTA) - The results of the Plant of the Year 2026 competition were announced in Belarus on 21 October, BelTA learned from the Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
Belarus’ Plant of the Year in 2026 will be common heather (calluna vulgaris), a woody evergreen low shrub with highly branched stems that grows relatively slowly (lifespan 40-50 years).
Common heather won the competition by a majority of votes against its closest competitors- meadow clover and English oak - in the online vote for the title of Belarus’ Plant of the Year 2026, in which anyone could participate.
The national Plant of the Year campaign is held annually to draw public attention to the wild plants of Belarus, their problems and the need for their preservation. Next year will see the events dedicated to the chosen plant.
