CEC chief: Lukashenko has the biggest initiative group at 2025 election

MINSK, 5 November (BelTA) – The largest of the registered initiative groups is the one that nominated Aleksandr Lukashenko as a presidential candidate, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Igor Karpenko told journalists answering a question from BelTA.

“Each has their own tactics and algorithms regarding the composition of initiative groups and signature collection. I can say that the largest group today is the one that nominated Aleksandr Lukashenko as a presidential candidate. There are several groups numbering about 3,500 citizens who will assist in collecting signatures. There are also smaller groups comprising about 100-150 people,” Igor Karpenko said.

According to him, information about these initiative groups, including the number of people in them, as well as photographs of prospective candidates, will be posted on the CEC website in the near future.

At present, the CEC is busy issuing certificates for members of initiative groups and signature sheets.

Igor Karpenko noted that in order to become a presidential candidate, applicants should meet a number of conditions stipulated by law. In particular, they need to collect at least 100,000 valid signatures and submit a declaration of income and property.

“The CEC will check all the documents and make a decision whether or not to register them as candidates and put their names on the ballot paper. There are seven prospective candidates now. Their number may be revised downwards to five, or three or four. Time will tell,” Igor Karpenko said, answering the question about how many people, according to his forecasts, will hit the final stage of the campaign trail.
