"On Point"
MINSK, 9 March (BelTA) - Ivan Shamyakin is also interesting because he wrote more than just prose, Dmitry Samokhvalov, Leading Research Fellow at the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art, Candidate of Historical Sciences, and Associate Professor, said in a new episode of BelTA’s YouTube channel On Point. The Nation’s Pride project, dedicated to the creative legacy of the Belarusian classic.
Analyzing Ivan Shamyakin’s body of work, Dmitry Samokhvalov noted its thematic diversity, but emphasized that the writer never completely moved away from the theme of war. “He has works on the theme of war even from the later stages of his career. He showed that people tried to escape from war, but war always came back to them,” he said.
Ivan Shamyakin is also interesting because he wrote more than just prose. “He experimented; he was a playwright and wrote film scripts. This is also relevant for contemporary writers. However, books aren’t read today the way they were in his time. It’s hard to even imagine now that someone could be published in such massive print runs as Ivan Shamyakin was. Of course, today’s writers also need to be able to be playwrights, to write for cinema, and to adapt to directors’ demands. Maybe even be able to write for computer games,” the research fellow said.
He added that “Ivan Shamyakin is precisely interesting because he didn’t stop, even after finding success with his books; he continued to improve himself”.
