Belarusian scientists develop import-substituting ingredients for baby food

MINSK, 4 June (BelTA) – Scientists at the Institute of Meat and Dairy Industry of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus are developing import-substituting ingredients for baby food, Head of the institute Gordei Gusakov said on the sidelines of the specialized exhibition Belagro 2026, BelTA has learned.

“We are involved in projects aimed at developing the dairy industry. One of the objectives is to provide the baby food sector with domestically produced ingredients. We are working on extracting minor milk proteins such as immunoglobulins and lactoferrin. A lactoferrin production facility is under construction in Slutsk. The technology is being developed at the Institute of Meat and Dairy Industry. Cooperation between the Agriculture and Food Ministry, manufacturers and scientists will enable Belarus to bring a new product to the market,’ Gordei Gusakov said.

Promising areas of research include food-grade caseins and caseinates. Scientists have worked with Belarusian manufacturers on lactose hydrolysis technology.
“Domestic hydrolysates remain a very challenging issue. The National Academy of Sciences and Belarusian State University are working on this topic. In furtherance of the dairy industry's development strategy, we expect to provide the baby food sector with domestically produced ingredients,” Gordei Gusakov added.
The Institute of Meat and Dairy Industry develops new food formulations, participates in biotechnology projects and is the only organization in the country that carries out the full-cycle production of starter cultures. The institute has established a national collection of industrial starter culture strains recognized as a national asset.

At the Belagro 2026 international exhibition, the institute showcased its latest developments and organized tastings of products made using its starter cultures.
