Belarusian, Russian experts define goals for protecting historical memory

MOSCOW, 5 February (BelTA) – The inaugural meeting of the Branch for the Preservation and Protection of Historical Memory under the Scientific Advisory Council of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia was held via videoconference on 5 February, connecting participants in Minsk and Moscow, BelTA has learned.

“It is crucial for us to develop a common position and view on the most important milestones that shape our historical consciousness and ensure the protection and preservation of historical memory. Russian and Belarusian societies are united by shared understandings and values in assessing historical events, alongside a common expert and academic school of thought. It is crucial that we jointly understand historical memory as something that not only underlies our worldview but is based on profound expert knowledge and is a reflection of historical truth. Intergenerational dialogue is crucial. Such common ground, of course, is the key to developing common positions,” Elena Malysheva, Head of the Branch for the Preservation and Protection of Historical Memory under the Scientific Advisory Council and Head of the National Center for Historical Memory under the President of the Russian Federation, told journalists.

Elena Malysheva recalled that the creation of the Commission for the Preservation and Protection of Historical Memory at the Union State Parliamentary Assembly was initiated by Aleksandr Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin at the Great Heritage, Common Future International Forum of the Union State in 2025. Experts will prepare proposals and provide scientific support for the commission’s work.

The Branch for the Preservation and Protection of Historical Memory under the Scientific Advisory Council includes experts representing academic institutions, the museum community, and public organizations involved in historical education. Belarus is represented, among others, by Professor Aleksandr Kovalenya, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Humanities and Arts of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus; Professor Denis Duk, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Rector of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Belarus; Professor Aleksandr Kokhanovsky, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Dean of the Faculty of History at Belarusian State University; and Professor Gennady Krasko, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Deputy Head of the National Security Academy of the Republic of Belarus.

Speaking about this year’s priorities, Elena Malysheva highlighted the 85th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War. “We certainly honor the memory of the victims of genocide, and the topic of Nazi crimes is also a unifying theme. I am confident that this year we will make proposals for joint work to perpetuate the memory and preserve the truth about the Nazi crimes committed against our peoples during the Great Patriotic War,” she noted.

She added that the second edition of the Great Heritage, Common Future International Forum of the Union State will be held this year in Brest and will feature sessions of the Scientific Advisory Council. “We plan to offer an open format with the participation of young people. And this is no coincidence. Because, when speaking about preserving historical memory, both Russia and Belarus are well aware that this is being done for the sake of the future, for the sake of the youth, and that the continuity of generations and intergenerational dialogue are the foundation of historical memory,” Elena Malysheva concluded.
