Belarus’ next population census may take place in 2029

MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – Belarus' next population census is supposed to be held in 2029, Chairwoman of the National Statistics Committee of Belarus Inna Medvedeva said on the air of the STV TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“For a long time, Belarus has followed the law regarding the organization of population censuses every ten years. Therefore, we expect that the next census will take place in 2029. Like the rest of the world, Belarus develops technologies and administrative data sources which will be used and connected during the census to simplify filling in census forms,” Inna Medvedeva said.

She also explained how Belarusian specialists interact with their Russian colleagues within the framework of the Union State. According to her, all targets of the relevant Union State program have been hit. "The program was related to the standardization of the methodology used in statistics. We continue this work, but already within the framework of the roadmaps," Inna Medvedeva explained. The parties are implementing innovations and discussing steps to move forward in accordance with the plans the Union State program outlines.

Inna Medvedeva spoke about the recruitment of young specialists to the statistics service. "The National Statistics Committee of Belarus is always glad to hire young specialists. We have a base department at Belarusian State Economic University – the Department of Statistics. We have been employing all graduates of the department for the last three years. Obviously, we gladly employ graduates of Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics and Belarusian State University. Among them are programmers and geographers, who work with us on GIS technologies and the upgrading of the standard products used by the National Statistical Committee," Inna Medvedeva said.
