Belarus nearly done setting up reference stations for precise positioning system

MINSK, 28 March (BelTA) – The final phase of the deployment of continuously operating reference stations (CORS) for the satellite-powered precise positioning system has begun in Belarus, BelTA learned from the website of the State Property Committee of Belarus.

According to the source, the Committee's Belaerocosmogeodesy enterprise has already prepared sites to place another eight continuously operating reference stations. Their deployment will represent the second and final stage of the project.

As of 1 January 2016 Belarus has 90 continuously operating reference stations. The other ones are scheduled for commissioning this year.

The satellite-powered precise positioning system is being created as part of the project meant to develop satellite technologies for geodetic measurements, land surveying and navigation in the Republic of Belarus.

The main purpose of the project is to provide coordinates and heights of specific sites for topographic surveying. The system will also offer data to specify borders of land plots, pinpoint the location of territorial markers and turning points of city boundaries as well as focal points for taking aerial photos in a specific system of coordinates. The system will be able to offer coordinates with the precision of 1-5cm. The data will come in handy for various applications ranging from economic ones to defensive ones.
