Belarus, China to expand cooperation in transport

MINSK, 18 November (BelTA) – Minsk and Beijing have agreed to strengthen cooperation in transport, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Transport Ministry following a working meeting between Belarusian Transport Minister Aleksei Lyakhnovich and Chinese Transport Minister Liu Wei.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 2nd China-Europe Railway Express Cooperation Forum. The agenda included cooperation in road, rail, and air transport.

The Chinese minister expressed commitment to developing practical cooperation with Belarus. “Belarus is a key transit country. We are ready to make efforts to implement the tasks outlined in the joint communiqué of the two governments signed in August 2024, and to promote continuous cooperation in the transport sector,” he noted.

Following the meeting, Aleksei Lyakhnovich and Liu Wei agreed to increase the number of flights between Belarus and China. Aviation authorities have been instructed to sign the corresponding memorandum.

In the railway sector, the parties discussed the operation of freight trains in the China-Europe direction through Belarus. Aleksei Lyakhnovich informed his colleague that, despite temporary closures of certain railway border crossings by some countries, Belarus has not imposed any restrictions, limited train departures or compromised the safety of cargo. “After the border reopened, the Belarusian side ensured the prompt transfer of accumulated trains through the Brest-Terespol crossing within just a few days,” the minister emphasized.

In the field of road transport, the parties expressed mutual interest in accelerating the implementation of an electronic permit system for international freight transport and discussed other matters related to future cooperation.

As part of the forum, Aleksei Lyakhnovich also visited the China-Europe freight train (Xi'an) assembly center.
