Belarus’ CEC intends to continue working with OSCE on uniform election assessment standards

MINSK, 15 May (BelTA0 -  We need to continue working with the OSCE structures in terms of development of uniform election assessment standards, Chairman of the Belarusian Central Election Commission Igor Karpenko said during the plenary session of the national seminar-conference "Experience and Prospects of Development of the Electoral System of the Republic of Belarus", BelTA learned.

Following every election campaign, the CEC of Belarus analyzes the practical application of the electoral legislation. These days election organizers from all regions of the country gathered in Minsk for the national seminar-conference to discuss the results of the election cycle 2022-2025, and to review the practice of application of the updated electoral legislation in the course of elections.

"The Central Election Commission will make every effort to further the successful development of international cooperation in electoral matters, which will allow, among other things, to strengthen the authority of the Belarusian electoral system in the international arena. In our opinion, it is important to strengthen the role of the SCO, along with that of the CIS, in international observation. In this regard, we suggest the CIS Advisory Council of Heads of Electoral Bodies make a proposal to draw up a document within the SCO framework similar to the Chisinau convention on the standards of democratic elections, which is in force in the CIS," Igor Karpenko said.

It is also important to continue working with the OSCE structures in terms of development of uniform election assessment standards, the CEC head said. "Here we also need consolidated support of the electoral bodies of foreign countries. We will pay special attention to this subject within the framework of the CIS Association of Election Bodies, CIS Advisory Council of Heads of Electoral Bodies, international conferences and forums, bilateral cooperation," he emphasized. “In this regard, we will hold the third international conference in Minsk this year. In June Kyrgyzstan will play host to the second Issyk-Kul Electoral Forum. Within its framework the CIS Advisory Council of Heads of Electoral Bodies will hold the 5th session under the chairmanship of the Belarusian CEC. We will present national methods of training of election organizers, set up a commission on youth policy.”

"To date, the CEC has signed bilateral cooperation agreements with the central election commissions of the Russian Federation, Uzbekistan. We have intensified bilateral cooperation with the central election authorities of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Iran, Türkiye, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. We are already working on draft agreements and memorandums. In short, our activity in the international arena in the field of electoral law and technology will contribute to the consolidation of the international expert community and strengthen the electoral sovereignty of our country in the future,” Igor Karpenko added.
