MINSK, 29 August (BelTA) – The United States cannot do without China, so Washington needs to negotiate with Beijing, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in an interview with China Media Group, BelTA has learned.
According to the head of state, during the recent negotiations with the Belarusian side, the Americans have raised the issue of cooperation between Belarus and China. In response, the president remarked that Beijing never closed its doors to Minsk, unlike Washington did.
“Therefore, we will continue cooperating with China. We will never betray our relations and our friendship with the Chinese people and the Chinese state, with my friend Xi Jinping. It would have been very hard for us to hold out during this period of crippling sanctions imposed by the collective West, if not for Russia and China,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
According to the Belarusian leader, during the negotiations, he tried to convince the Americans that China “cannot be brought to its knees”. To support his point, he referenced the recent attempt by U.S. President Donald Trump to increase tariffs on Chinese goods. Shortly afterward, the U.S. president had to back down.
“Why? Because such a powerful empire as the United States of America cannot do without China. As I often tell the Americans, the only viable path is to come to terms with China. China has become an empire, without which it is impossible to solve any global issue today,” Aleksandr Lukashenko believes.
The president added that he has been closely watching China’s development over the past 30-plus years. That is precisely why he is sure that China cannot be browbeaten.
“If you are strong, we will also be strong, because we have close relations,” the Belarusian president concluded.
