Lukashenko urges to expand opportunities for gifted youth in science

MINSK, 27 August (BelTA) - Belarusian science should focus its efforts and knowledge on the implementation of promising science-intensive projects, with the university science playing a bigger role in it, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the Nationwide Conference on Teaching on 27 August, BelTA has learned.

“We talk a lot about improving the quality of education. You can see that this topic does not leave my agenda, the president’s agenda. We constantly discuss it at meetings on the economy, science development, agriculture, regional policy. The role of science will be significantly strengthened and increased literally from next year. The overarching idea (and all such meetings are focused on making decisions to implement it) is the development of breakthrough technologies and the opening of new industries. For this purpose we need qualified personnel capable of creative thinking, solving non-standard tasks, adopting the best practices, introducing them into real production and social sector,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

According to the president, Belarus has placed a great emphasis on science. The authorities are trying to reorient the work of the National Academy of Sciences, directing its efforts and knowledge to the implementation of promising science-intensive projects.

“University science should play a bigger role here. It is a key element of the country's scientific potential. We are talking about expanding opportunities for capable young people to realize themselves in such an important field for us. These opportunities should not be concentrated only in the country’s capital. I really hope that you have heard me in this,” the head of state said. “Scientists should prepare those who will replace them, pass their knowledge to our talented, gifted youth. This is my ironclad demand.”
